Dateline: Edgefield County, South Carolina, 1810-1847. This is a list of church members who attended Bethany Baptist Church. Both slaves and owners went to the same Christian community. Blacks and whites attended church together.

This Christian community tried to set up a just society. It is probable that blacks and white sat separately—but then so did men and women, probably, though I have no documented proof about this specific community on the two issues of gender separation and racial separation.

But at least they were trying to put things right. It takes time.

When a member was excommunicated, it was for egregious misconduct, like adultery or theft.

The two names in bold font are my direct line: Wm Wilbourn, his wife Kary (Cary, she always spelled her name Cairy) Wilbourn, Widow Wilbourn (this is Cairy, for William died in March 1827). The other Wilbourns are their children. But the purpose of this post is bigger than family history. It is about American church history.

Barnett the slave is also put in bold font, since he has a special story to tell.

Another slave, Sank, also in the list, was freed, when Cairy and her family left for Mississippi in January 1834.

This is as close a transcription as I could get, leaving in even inconsistent spelling. The church secretary did not use apostrophes to show possession.

Abbreviations:

B = Baptized

L = Letter

Dis’t = Dismissed or Dismission = A letter stating the member was free to leave the church in good standing. Many of them left for states farther west, like Alabama and Mississippi.

D’o or Do = Ditto

Dec’d = Deceased

Experience = Baptism, but it implies that baptism gives one an “experience” with God.

Names crossed out = moved away or left for other reasons
